A Transformative Year For BOMA Canada
The year 2016 was truly transformational for BOMA Canada, and 2017 promises to be our most exciting yet. Years in the making, 2016 saw the launch of BOMA BEST 3.0, the latest iteration of our flagship sustainability program. To say that BOMA BEST 3.0 is new and improved would be the understatement of the decade. It’s a brand new program, designed by and for today’s property management industry. Countless industry experts volunteered from across the country, vetted every question, tested every answer and oversaw the entire project from soup to nuts. As a result, our new product reflects exactly what you told us you need, and it is ready to empower you to better manage your properties, and to be rewarded for your efforts.
Looking ahead, BOMA BEST is going global. With the first certifications already complete in the US and strong interest from around the world, your program is emerging as a Canadian global champion, waving our flag and making our world greener. We hope you share in our deep pride in this accomplishment.
We have Also seen our Portfolio Program gain a real foothold in the market, with over 1,000 buildings certified and more being added all the time. Our tenant-focused BOMA BEST Sustainable Workplaces module is also off to a promising start, with certifications across Canada and the United States.

Outside of BOMA BEST, our Awards program is as robust as ever. After years of being shut out internationally, Canadian buildings took home four awards in 2015 and one in 2016. This year, eleven Canadian winners will be competing with the world’s best buildings at BOMA International’s TOBY Awards Gala in June, and we are confident of many more successes to come. And speaking of awards and recognition, our own Chair Kim Saunders, became a BOMA Fellow, the first ever Fellow to be recognized outside the United States. Kim was honoured by BOMA International for exemplary contribution to the industry and BOMA.
We also had a significant win ourselves, after answering a nation-wide RFP, Natural Resources Canada selected BOMA Canada to be funded to create a series of new awards celebrating energy efficiency and net zero buildings. Details will follow in the future, as we are currently working out precisely how to deliver this exciting new program to you.
I could go on and on about the level of activity we have in our office, and all the work we are doing to advance our organization’s mission of serving you. But that will have to wait for the future. For now, let me just say that I’m delighted that you’re reading this newsletter, which we launch today, and which is the best way to stay current with what is happening to your organization and your industry, across Canada.
